Phegea 47 – nummer 1 (1 maart 2019) (Mededelingen)

Meert R.: Feeding behaviour of Eccopisa effractella larvae (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae).
Phegea 47(1): 16–20.
In the summer of 2017 several larvae of Eccopisa effractella Zeller, 1848 were found in old webs of apple ermine, Yponomeuta malinellus Zeller, 1838 on apple trees (Malus domestica) in an orchard in Lebbeke (East Flanders). Later that year some larvae could be obtained from old Yponomeuta spp. webs on bird cherry (Prunus padus) and even on spindle (Euonymus europaeus). After completing some experiments with newly found larvae in 2018, it is clear that E. effractella can complete its development entirely within those webs and does not need fresh tissue to feed on. In this article, these new findings about the biology of E. effractella are described in detail.

Phegea 47 – nummer 3 (1 september 2019) (Mededelingen)

Garrevoet T., Goossens R. & Meert R.: Chamaesphecia nigrifrons (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae), een nieuwe wespvlindersoort voor België.
Phegea 47(3): 74–79.

John E., Hawkes W. L. S. & Walliker E. J.: A review of Mediterranean records of Catopsilia florella (Lepidoptera: Pieridae, Coliadinae), with notes on the spring 2019 arrival in Cyprus of this Afrotropical migrant.
Phegea 47(3): 80–86.
The authors review early reports of Catopsilia florella (Fabricius, 1775) from central areas of the Mediterranean and comment on the first recorded spring arrival of C. florella in Cyprus. The species’ appearance coincided with a substantial migration of Vanessa cardui (Linnaeus, 1758) and other insects across the eastern Mediterranean in spring 2019, in which C. florella was most likely a participant. With increasing temperatures in the region and the incursion of other Afrotropical butterfly species into the eastern Mediterranean in recent decades, the possibilities for future establishment of C. florella are discussed.

Troukens W. & Crevecoeur L.: Euglenes pygmaeus (Coleoptera: Aderidae): nieuw voor de Belgische keverfauna.
Phegea 47(3): 87–89.

Couckuyt J.: Sinus management, grassland mowing in an agricultural environment: how to improve and adapt the management in favour of butterflies and insects?
Phegea 47(3): 111–120.
The term sinus management was used when the author saw a Google Earth photograph (Fig.1) of a nature reserve De Venne (S1) that he was managing as a hay meadow. This new way of mowing was photographed in July 2013 for an update of Google Earth’s website during that year. The mowing track looked like the sinusoid line of the mathematical profile of alternative current. The author coined the term sinus path to describe it and sinus management for the mowing system and these two terms will be used throughout this article. When managing grasslands for butterflies, it is important to maintain all conditions that butterflies need at different stages of their development. When mowing a grassland with sinus management, a lot of nectar sources are still available for adult butterflies, as well as food plants for larvae and shelter zones for eggs and pupae. All requirements for each stage are present throughout the whole year. A range of microclimates is formed, creating optimal conditions for warming up zones and conditions for female butterflies to lay eggs on the present host plants. The interaction between an area administered with sinus management and the surrounding landscape is essential. Within huge areas of natural landscape, this way of management is not really necessary. However, it becomes of importance in small, isolated places and if corridors are not present in that surrounding landscape. Sinus management can provide all conditions needed for the invertebrate fauna as well as for the botanical development. There is no strict time schedule with sinus management, allowing a nature manager to reach as well his goal of a nutrient poor, as a rich flowering grassland. Today, sinus management has been introduced in several grasslands in Flanders and the Netherlands. A detailed step by step brochure (S2) of this sinus management is available as supplementary material. All photographs are taken by the author unless otherwise mentioned.

Zerganipour A., Esfandiari M., Naderi A. & Rabieh M. M.: Identification of the butterflies (Lepidoptera, Papilionoidea) in the IMCA (Insect and Mite Collection of Ahvaz) at Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, Khuzestan, Iran.
Phegea 47(4): 129–139.
Butterflies are with about 19,000 species one of the best-known groups of insects and include five families in Iran. In the present work, we studied the butterflies of the “Insect and Mite Collection of Ahvazˮ located at the Department of Plant Protection, Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz which dates back to 55 years ago. All butterfly species deposited in the collection were studied and identified. We examined wing patterns, genitalia, and in a few cases used DNA barcoding by means of standard primers (LepF1 & LepR1) for species identification. As a result, 82 species and subspecies belonging to Papilionidae (5 taxa), Hesperiidae (11 taxa), Lycaenidae (15 taxa), Pieridae (17 taxa) and Nymphalidae (34 taxa) were identified from 21 Iranian Provinces. Among them, 24 new provincial records were registered for the Provinces of Khuzestan (11), Ilam (4), Esfahan (3), Yazd (2), Lorestan, Bushehr, Khorasan-e Razavi and Kohgiluyeh-va Boyerahmad (1 each). Our results indicate that despite well-known information about butterflies in Iran, their local distribution maps and taxonomic status can be further supplemented and revised by conducting more research into explicit species diversity in each area.
