Reportage van de Militair kamp van Sissonne /
Reportage from the Military Camp of Sissonne, France
Tijdens het weekend van 30 mei - 1 juni 2025 namen 9 leden van de VVE WG Dagvlinders deel aan een voorjaarsexcursie in het Militair kamp van Sissonne. Er is tegenwoordig veel activiteit in het kamp vanwege de oorlog in Oekraïne maar we konden toch een gaatje vinden in de agenda van het militaire apparaat. Het weer zat goed mee dus waren de dagvlinders ook van de partij. De opdracht was simpel en duidelijk: is Melitaea athalia, de Bosparelmoervlinder aanwezig in het kamp of niet? In elk geval was Melitaea aurelia, de Steppeparelmoervlinder abundant aanwezig. Het steppeachtige grasland afgewisseld met struweel is 'the place to be' in dit immense gebied. In sommige zones bevindt zich goed ontwikkeld loofbos en het was dan ook daar dat er te zoeken viel voor onze doelsoort.
During the weekend of 30 May - 1 June 2025, 9 members of the VVE WG Butterflies participated in a spring excursion at the Sissonne Military Camp. There is a lot of activity at the camp these days because of the war in Ukraine, but we were still able to find a slot in the military's schedule. The weather was fine, so butterflies were also in attendance. The task was simple and clear: is Melitaea athalia, the Woodland Fritillary, present in the camp or not? In any case, Melitaea aurelia, the Steppe Fritillary, was abundantly present. The steppe-like grassland interspersed with thickets is “the place to be” in this immense area. In some zones, there is a well-developed deciduous forest, and it was these landscapes that we looked for our target species.
Sinusbeheer op VRT and VTM Nieuws /
Sinus management on VRT and VTM News
De laatste tijd haalt het Sinusbeheer regelmatig de media. Zo werd onlangs dit nieuwe type graslandbeheer toegelicht op VRT en VTM Nieuws. Het Sinusbeheer werd in 2013 specifiek voor dagvlinders ontwikkeld in Vlaanderen. In Phegea 47(3): 111–120 werd in 2019 ook een Engelstalige versie gepubliceerd rond dit onderwerp. Sindsdien is dit Sinusbeheer niet meer weg te denken in de wereld van gras- en hooilandenbeheer en wordt dit ook reeds in andere Europese landen toegepast.
Recently, Sinus management has been making regular media headlines. For example, this new type of grassland management was recently explained on VRT and VTM News. Sinus management was developed specifically for butterflies in Flanders in 2013. In Phegea 47(3): 111-120, an English-language version was published about this topic in 2019. Since then, this Sinus management has become indispensable in the world of grass and hay meadow management and is already applied in other European countries.

Colleagues from Czechia ask for our help
Some of you are familiar with the LepEU project (https://sites.google.com/view/lepeu), but some of you are not. So let me start by explaining in a few sentences what LepEU is and what we are trying to do.
It is a new generation genomic project led by Chris Wheat (chris.wheat@zoologi.su.se) that originally only targeted European butterfly species, but that changed and we decided to work on common European moths as well. Our aim is to investigate the genetic structure, evolutionary dynamics or possible range shifts.
However, sampling is slightly different from normal trap sampling. The sampled individuals have to be placed alive in pure ethanol 98% p.a., later they are stored in a freezer at -25°C. Another tricky part of the sampling is that we are looking for 10 specimens per country, but the collected specimens must be at least 50 km apart.
Anyone who helps to collect the moths will of course be included in the papers.

Afgelopen winter zijn onze imkers bijna een derde van hun bijen verloren! En met de wilde bijtjes en hommels gaat het niet veel beter. Een tekort aan gifvrije (!) bloemen is een groot probleem. Maar bijna iedereen kan helpen. Een paar vierkante meter is genoeg.

Wij hebben als Regionaal Landschap, samen met Viaverda, Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen en 4 partnergemeenten (Maldegem, Eeklo, Deinze en Zulte) een project rond habitatverbetering voor wilde bestuivers opgestart genaamd Blooming Buzzness. Ons doel is om in de 4 partnergemeenten een bijenwerkgroep op te zetten en een bijenactieplan op te maken en gedurende de loop van het project (tot juni 2027) ook enkele acties van het bijenactieplan uit te voeren.

Navigating the AI Revolution: Preparing our members for the future of AI www.researchinformation.info
On 19 May, the editor-in-chief of Phegea followed the Live webinar organised by the Web of Science group on the use of AI in academic research. Our members raised many questions about the ethics of AI use. So, we heard the explanations of experts about the future development of AI-based tools for research in general. AI is of the same importance as the appearance of the Internet 30 years ago. Members of the Flemish Entomological Society are setting very good practices in AI use. We intelligently use AI, to perform certain tasks and to help us deliver better biodiversity science. Phegea is a trilingual (sometimes multilingual) journal, so we use AI-based editorial programmes to spot your typos, to make your sentences sound better and to assist our native speaking editors to correct your summaries in different languages. AI is not used for the replacement of our editors but for assisting their work. Our young members are using the AI-based identification app Obsidentify. Following the good example of our honorary secretary, quite some FES members learned new skills in coding of taxa in such a way that our relational database-backed catalogues are updatable in real time. There are many very good practices when our members use AI in a smart, intelligent way, knowing well the contents and where the information is coming from. FES goes together with our time and sets a good example for others.

Met enorm veel plezier en trots kondigen we aan dat de monografie die we samen met onze Australische collega's hebben geschreven is gepubliceerd.
We presenteren 9 nieuwe genera, 38 nieuwe soorten voor de wetenschap op een holistische manier, inclusief 173 volledige mitochondriale genomen uit collectiespecimens van soms meer dan 100 jaar oud. Deze studie is een game changer voor collectie-gebaseerd onderzoek.

It is with enormous pleasure and pride we announce that the monograph we co-authored with our Australian colleagues has been published.
We present 9 new genera, 38 new species for science in a holistic way, including 173 whole mitochondrial genomes from collection specimens sometimes more than 100 years old. This study is a game changer for collection-based research.
